Somatic Therapy FAQs

Answers to common questions about somatic therapy, including what to expect in sessions, who this work supports, virtual options in North Carolina, insurance, and scheduling. Guided by Kathleen McIntyre, MSW.
How is somatic therapy different?
Somatic therapy invites the wisdom of the body as a source of information and guidance. Rather than working only through thoughts or narratives, we pay attention to physical sensations, patterns, and nervous system responses. This approach helps uncover how stress or trauma is held in the body and supports the ability to take in experiences of calm, neutrality, and steadiness. The work focuses on restoring regulation and supporting change from the inside out.
Who is somatic therapy helpful for?
Somatic therapy can be helpful for individuals experiencing chronic stress, anxiety, trauma, or a sense of disconnection from their bodies. It is often supportive when symptoms feel physical, persistent, or difficult to shift through talk therapy alone. This work can also benefit those seeking greater regulation, resilience, and a more grounded relationship with themselves.
What does a typical session look like?
Sessions are collaborative and body-centered. We may talk, pause to notice physical sensations, work with breath, movement, or grounding practices, and track nervous system responses in real time. Each session is guided by what is present for you, holding both the moment you are in and the broader goals of your therapeutic process.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. I currently accept Aetna and Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Self-pay options are also available.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. I offer virtual therapy sessions for clients located in North Carolina. Somatic and presence-based coaching is also available virtually for individuals located outside of North Carolina and internationally.
How long is the work?
The first session, which includes intake, is 75 minutes. Ongoing sessions are typically 50–60 minutes. Extended 75-minute sessions are available when appropriate and are also offered for coaching work.
Do you work with teens?
Yes. I work with adolescents ages 16 and up.
What happens in the first session?
Instead of starting with extensive paperwork, we gather your history together in conversation. We focus on understanding your strengths, resources, and current challenges, with attention to how these experiences show up in your body. We also touch on family and support systems. During the first session, we begin somatic practices to support grounding and regulation. The pace is collaborative and responsive to you.
Are nature sessions required?
No. Sessions can take place indoors or outdoors, depending on your preference, comfort, and weather conditions.
What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice are subject to a fee, except in cases of emergency or illness.
